At the conclusion of the Centenary meeting of St. James Royal Ark Mariner Lodge No 318 there was a dramatic surprise!  The Pro Grand Master, M W Bro Richard Wallis asked for V W Bro William J Whittall to be put before him.

He then proceeded to appoint V W Bro Whittall ‘in the field’ to the rank of Past Grand Junior Warden in recognition of his long and distinguished service to both Mark Masonry and Royal Ark Mariner Masonry.

This is an incredibly high honour, rarely given, and entitles the holder to the style of ‘Right Worshipful Brother’.  The appointment was greeted with rapturous applause by all present, and a sight never seen before – R W Bro Bill Whittall lost for words!

Bill was advanced in to St. James’s Lodge on 21st March 1960 at the age of 26 and in the same year being elevated into St. James RAM on 21st November, and being their Master in 1965 and 1967 respectively. His contribution to our Province has been outstanding, culminating in his being appointed Provincial Grand Senior Warden in 1974.

He holds the very rare distinction of being a Founder of both the Joseph Whittall Lodge of Installed Mark Masons (named after his father who was PGM from 1964) and Kenneth Shenton Lodge of Installed Commanders and he was later Master of both.  He was also a Founder and later Master of the Mark Grand Officers Lodge.

In Grand Lodge he was first appointed to Acting Grand Junior Deacon in 1977 (another rare appointment) and he became RAMGR the following year.  His final promotion to PGMO in 2008 was another rarity for the Province.

I am sure we all wish Bill many congratulations in this recognition of his outstanding service to so many aspects of Freemasonry.

Mike Heenan

Provincial Grand Master
